A (broad): Part of a plant-scroll. At the top, part of the volute of a spiral scroll with a large triangular scooped leaf is divided by a moulding or a split stem from a triangular area of berries below.
B (narrow): Four deep mouldings separated by irregular grooves.
C and D: Broken.
This plant-scroll is quite different from cross-shaft 1 or the tiny fragment 3. The leaf type and the distinctive stone and the split stem are closely paralleled at Jarrow (no. 1). There is a close correspondence in the sizes of the churches of Jarrow and Escomb, as well as in the styles of ornament on the sculpture, so that there may be a close relationship between these two sites. The decoration with deep grooves on B is also found on 4 and 7.
