The stone round the socket appears to be plain.
A: The short end, which is the most visible, appear originally to have had a lightly grooved moulding, with a deeply cut inner edge, forming a small square panel. Within this is apparently an inscription, probably in Anglo-Saxon capitals:
S[I—
Without removing this piece from the wall it is impossible to be sure of its complete shape and hence function. The `inscription' may be only letter-like, but if it really is part of an inscription, it should continue around the other sides of the stone.
