Description

This can only be derived from Gibb's drawing in Stuart (1867, pl. xxvi, 3). Each face seems to be edged with a flat-band moulding.

A: Part of two panels survive, which are separated by a triple roll moulding. (i) Part of a plain plait. (ii) Part of a key pattern, possibly Allen 1903, no. 996.

B: Part of an interlace panel, with zoomorphic or foliate terminals, or possibly part of a plant-scroll.

Discussion

There is too little information in the surviving drawing to be dogmatic about this piece, but it seems to be related to 5 and 6 in its scheme of decoration. If the motif on B, bottom right, is a triangular leaf with two berries, then this is to be compared with 1. Plant-scrolls are not a usual feature in the ornamental repertoire of either sculpture or manuscripts from Lindisfarne.

Date
Uncertain, but possibly eighth or ninth ccntury
