Description

Only one carved face survives. Part of a panel of interlace set in bold roll mouldings. On one side the background is flat and chamfered back, while on the other the background curves in a shallow convex curve. The interlace consists of one register of encircled pattern F and the outer edge of another.

Discussion

The unweathered surface of the fragment seems to indicate that it was part of an interlace fitment of the church. Its patterns compare with 9 and 19 and it could be some form of pilaster. The distinctive interlace roundels are paralleled in early manuscripts, such as the Book of Durrow (fol. 85v). There is not enough surviving to support Adcock's reconstruction (1974, pl. 7A) of this piece with a rounded end.
