Description

Only one carved face survives. The edge has a broken flange at a recessed level. An interlace is bordered by a wide flat-band moulding which is curved and widens slightly at one end. The interlace consists of a fragment of linked loops but it is not possible to reconstruct the total pattern (see, however, Adcock 1974, pl. 7c).

Discussion

The recessed flange is also found on two other fragments, 9 and 17, but, unlike them, the interlace on this piece is not bordered by roll mouldings. However, this fragment seems to be part of the same sort of feature, since both the stone and the style of carving are similar. There is no certainty about the width of pattern of this interlace and it need not be as narrow as Adcock's reconstruction (1974, pl. 7C). The link pattern could, however, show a family relationship with 9.
