Overview
Present Location
Set into north wall of nave, inside
Evidence for Discovery
None. Hall (1889) says that Birtley 2 was found with other stones, which could possibly include this one.
Church Dedication
St Giles
Present Condition
Split diagonally and badly mended: much of surrounding moulding lost
Description

Only one face is visible.

A (broad): This shows a circle cross, type E3, in relief with a sunken centre and surrounded by a rounded moulding.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

Such crosses formed from a circle are found elsewhere associated with Saxon churches (see Monkwearmouth 28-9). They are difficult to date. Its rather clumsy cutting may put it late in the series.

Date
Second half of eleventh century(?)
