Type c, niche. The ridge and much of the heads of the end beasts are missing, although the muzzle and jowls of one (face A) is clear. Their fore legs only are shown. These have four toes and are extended away from the jowls to form the vertical edge of the central panels of the interlace.
A and C (long): The centre of each long face is filled with three panels of flat four-strand plain plait composed of broad flat strands. The panels are divided by a flat grooved moulding. Below the interlace panels is a small irregularly shaped niche.
This hogback is closely paralleled by Sockburn 18. This type (c, niche) is confined to Brompton, Dinsdale, Ingleby Arncliffe and Sockburn. The end beasts are large, roughly carved, and with a distinctive curve between head and fore leg.
