Description

The stone is fashioned on a solid block with the cross shape in low relief and the ends of the arms projecting slightly beyond the circular block.

A and C (broad): A cross, B6 in form, but the arms are cut through by a large circular centre.

B and D (narrow): Plain.

Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

It seems that this type of monument could develop out of types such as Birtley 3. The increase in the size of the centre roundel seems to be a post-Conquest characteristic and eventually only the vestiges of the ends of the cross-arms survive on the slab.

Date
Second half of eleventh century
