Description

Head, type E8.

A (broad): In the centre is a large deeply projecting boss. Surrounding it and following the shape of the arms are four pick-outlined grooves which give the effect of strands. On the lower vertical arm an extra pair of outlined strands is added and `bound' with a horizontal band.

B and D (narrow): Smoothly dressed.

C (broad): In the centre is a small shallow boss. The shape of the arms is outlined by a single incised strand.

Discussion

This shape of cross appears to be rather late in the series, and the crude outline ornament also must be considered late.

Date
Early eleventh century
