Cross-shaft with interlace square-knot. The incomplete motif consists of two squares with looped angles set diagonally and entwined. The carved surface of the raised motif is close-hatched with fine incised lines either side of a median-incised line, while the background is covered with fine, vertical tooling. The lower 22 cm (7.9 in) of the stone is uncarved.
Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date)
The motif on this cross-shaft is very similar to carvings from Ewenni 2 and Merthyr Mawr 11 in Glamorgan (Redknap and Lewis 2007, 295–6, ill. G19; 483, ill. G110). This type of square-knot is also found on two fragments of grave-covers from Bisley Parish, Gloucestershire (nos. 2 and 3, Ills. 453, 455), while at Llangarron, Herefordshire (no. 1, Ill. 536) there is a similar incised square-knot motif but without the encircling ring or enclosed diamond-shaped knot.
