Overview

Object type: Part of an abacus

Measurements: H. 7.2 cm (2.8 in); W. 25.3 cm (9.9 in); D. 15.8 cm (6.2 in)

Stone type: Very pale orange (8/2) sparry matrix supported oolite. Ooliths mainly hollow (0.2 to 1.0 mm). A little shell debris up to 3 mm. Cleeve Cloud Member, Birdlip Limestone Formation, Inferior Oolite Group, Middle Jurassic.

Evidence for Discovery

Found in archaeological excavation 1975–83, reused in Period VIIA, in the c. 1120 foundations of F602.

St Oswald

Present Condition

Rather damaged; profile survives.

Description

Part of an abacus that is rectangular in plan. The profile is very similar to St Oswald 19.
