Church Dedication
Present Condition
Face A has been recut at the top for a rebate; face C is extremely worn
Description

Rectangular cross-shaft. The incomplete panels on all four faces are bordered laterally by a roll moulding.

A (broad): Two parallel vertical rows of three-strand plain stopped-plait with pellets, separated by a single-branch spiral-scroll.

B (narrow): Three-strand plain plait with pellets.

C (broad): Traces of two parallel vertical rows of plain stopped-plait (?).

D (narrow): Three-strand plain stopped-plait with pellets.

Discussion

Spiral-scroll school (Introduction, pp. 33-8). The ornamental layout on face A is closely paralleled on Plumbland 1 and St Bees 4 (and probably also on Beckermet St Bridget 2), whilst the decoration on the narrow faces is very close to that on St Bees 2.
