Description

Hammerhead; upper arm, type A6, lateral arms, type B10.

A (broad): At the centre is a large encircled boss in high relief with a drilled hole piercing the crown. In the upper arm is an incised linear cross with barred terminals. The arms are framed by incised and punch-outlined lines which meet the central circle but are otherwise undecorated.

B–D: Undecorated.

Discussion

The hammerhead shape is a form restricted to the Viking period and its distribution has a distinctly western bias (Introduction, p. 31). Incised crosslets and the 'elephant ear' shaping of the panels on the lateral arms of the cross reflect local Solway predilections (see pp. 45, 76).
