Description

Rectangular shaft, each face carrying a single incomplete panel bordered laterally by a cabled moulding.

A (broad): A series of parallel incised lines are set in connected and interlocking curves across the panel.

B–D: All these faces are covered with a series of incised zig-zag lines cut horizontally across the shaft.

Discussion

The whole ornament of this shaft is designed to give the appearance of interlace. Local parallels for this treatment are provided by Walton and Millom (no. 2) but similar approaches can be found at sites as widespread as Kirkclaugh in south-western Scotland, Wooler in Northumberland, York, Forcett in Yorkshire, and on an unpublished example recently found at Haworth, Yorkshire (Collingwood 1927a, fig. 226; Hall 1980, 33; Collingwood 1907a, 320; Cramp 1984, pl. 229, 1292).
