Discussion

Appendix A item (stones dating from Saxo-Norman overlap period or of uncertain date).

The Y-shaped disposition of the decoration links this cover with some of those from Stedham, Chithurst, Cocking, and Steyning, all in Sussex, and Titsey 4 in Surrey (Ill. 255). Grave-covers from all these sites have similar decoration. They are dated archaeologically to the mid to late twelfth century, and a similar date can be suggested for this example.
